Zarina - Paper like skin
There was this great show at the Art Institute last fall by an Indian born artist who goes by Zarina. Her pieces were beautifully quite poetic moments using somewhat simple materials. She worked mostly in printmaking and sculpture. The show was organized by the Hammer museum as a retrospective.
Its hard to pick a favorite because there were so many diversely different pieces that captured their own bit of greatness. As is to be expected most photographs don't do the work justice but some of the detail doesn't come through in a photograph at all. There was a series of works on laminated paper that she meditatively poked with a needle over and over in an organized way. Another piece was a piece of paper completely covered in crushed obsidian creating a dark void with an eye-catching sparkle.
